Modern Foreign Language
FRENCH PROGRESSION OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
All pupils are encouraged to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating as they work towards becoming life-long language learners. French has been chosen as our modern foreign language.
All children from Years 3 to 6 will have the opportunity to develop their linguistic skills in an enjoyable way.
Intent
At Fairlawn, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop and nurture curiosity for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. We aim to build the children’s cultural capital so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures and especially pique their interest in languages of other cultures. We hope to lay the foundations for future language learning.
Implementation
At Fairlawn we want our children to:
- progressively develop their language skills in a manageable way
- learn to listen to French through songs, poems and stories
- introduce them to French culture
- have a go at speaking and singing in French
- have a go at reading and writing words and phrases
- learn the similarities and differences between French and English
- develop accurate pronunciation and understanding
At Fairlawn, we use Language Angels to help support our teachers in their planning and teaching of French.
In the summer term, we celebrate the rich diversity and cultural heritage of our school with a Languages Day which gives our students and their families a chance to teach us new languages and introduce us to aspects of their culture.
Impact
Learning French has always been important at Fairlawn and we aim to get the children to a point where they are able to engage in short conversations with others. By the end of key stage 2 we aim to give the children a solid MFL foundation as they continue their language learning into Key Stage 3 and beyond.
